Riverside Drive Viaduct Rehabilitation

  • Project Details

The NYC Department of Transportation selected our subsidiary, Judlau Contracting, Inc., to upgrade the Riverside Drive Viaduct structure that traverses over W. 158th Street through to W. 161st Street. Improvements to this one-third-mile section of the elevated superstructure will increase reliability for travelers driving on the six-mile-long scenic roadway, which links the upper west side of Manhattan along the Hudson River to and from the George Washington Bridge.

On this $102 million project, workers replaced the viaduct's concrete deck and associated steel members, performed utility work, removed superstructure encasements, replaced steel bearings, cleaned and painted steel, as well as installed a new lighting system. Other work activities include the placement of new concrete sidewalks and constructing new parapet walls comprised of granite.

Initially constructed in 1908, with another section added in 1927, this section of Riverside Drive received some much-needed upgrades in the 1980s, but then decades later was deemed in need of significant rehabilitation.

Due to the project's complex site logistics, the construction team frequently communicated with numerous agencies, including Amtrak, New York City Department of Environmental Protection, NYPD, FDNY, and private utility companies to coordinate work activities.
