I-294 Grand Avenue to Wolf Road/I-490 Ramps S1 & S2
This $170 million contract required the reconstruction and widening of over one mile of I-294, also known as the Tri-State Tollway, from Grand Avenue to Wolf Road. The project, which also encompassed the construction of two new bridges, is part of the client’s $4 billion plan to increase capacity, reduce congestion, and improve travel reliability along this heavily trafficked highway.
To carry out this challenging contract, our subsidiary, Judlau Contracting, Inc., self-performed the demolition and reconstruction of four existing bridges on the Tri-State Tollway and the construction of two new bridges, also known as flyover ramps, that connect I-294 to the Elgin O’Hare Western Access Tollway (I-490). Judlau also constructed five mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls and three cast-in-place retaining walls. Other required activities include paving mainline roadway, relocating utilities, installing signage, and performing drainage improvements, erosion control measures, and landscaping, in addition to Intelligent Transportation Systems infrastructure.
The project featured the placement of an impressive 50,000 cubic yards of concrete, more than 250,000 cubic yards of earthwork, and the installation of 5,000 tons of bridge steel.
