Florida Turnpike Widening from Bird Road to SR-836

  • Project Details

This $111.5 million design-build contract was awarded to OHLA USA, Inc.'s subsidiary, Community Asphalt, to widen the Florida Turnpike from Bird Road to the north of SR 836. The project's purpose was to improve the Turnpike to satisfy future needs for capacity, reliability, and safety in northwest Miami.

The contract called for the widening of ten travel lanes and four interior Express Toll Lanes and auxiliary lanes in the northbound and southbound directions between the interchanges. The structure included the Turnpike bridge widenings over SW 8th Street and West Flagler Street. Simultaneously, the Community Asphalt project team carried out a new 135-foot-long bridge at Coral Way, which spans active Turnpike traffic, the Snapper Creek Canal, and SE 117th Avenue.

After the final design was completed and approved, a new bridge was constructed over the C-11 Canal. This contract included channel excavation that called for extensive underwater construction. At the project's north end, the team erected two new flyovers totaling 638 feet. These structures carry vehicles to and from the Express Toll lanes, allowing traffic to enter and exit the Turnpike from SR-836. The project team was also responsible for the nearly 600,000 cubic yards of embankment on-site and the coordination, removal, and relocation of gas, water, power, and other utilities. Design and construction of the Fiberoptic lines within the project limits and construction of mechanically stabilized earth walls, retaining walls, and concrete barrier walls were also part of the work scope. Other major facets of the effort included constructing drainage systems, performing geotechnical exploration, excavation, paving and installing highway lighting, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), signage, and signaling systems.
