COLLEGE POINT, NY – January 15, 2024 – OHLA, through its U.S. subsidiary Judlau Contracting, has been awarded a $323.8 million road reconstruction contract in Illinois (United States) from the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority (ISTHA). This brings the total number of projects performed for ISTHA to 21 since OHLA commenced operations in the Midwestern United States nine years ago.
Key elements of the project, which is located on the southbound Tri-State Tollway (I-294) at the I-290/I-88 Interchange, focus on significant demolition and excavation work, construction of 13 new steel- and precast-concrete beam bridges, and the removal of pavement and placement of new concrete to widen 2.4 miles of roadway and shoulder in the southbound direction.
Other important contract scope elements consist of the removal and replacement of 183,998 square feet of new noise abatement wall and construction of 180,753 square feet of temporary and permanent mechanically stabilized earth retaining wall. The OHLA team will perform drainage and utility improvements, Intelligent Transportation System infrastructure, temporary and permanent lighting systems, erosion control measures, and landscaping improvements. Placement of signage, maintenance of traffic operations, and other miscellaneous work are also part of the effort.
The purpose of the project is to improve safety and travel reliability on the interchange, which is used by more than 300,000 vehicles every day. The I-290/I-88 Interchange at I-294 is one of the most important interchanges on the Tollway system. It is not only a crossroads for commuter and local traffic but also an integral part of the regional freight network.
